How to measure for blinds (and why we re-measure)

Measuring for a blind is not hard, but small errors cost you light gaps or a blind that will not fit. Here is how to get a good working measurement — though we always re-measure precisely before anything is made.

Recess or exact fit?

A recess (inside) fit sits within the window reveal for a neat look. An exact (outside) fit mounts on the wall or frame and overlaps the opening, which blocks more light and suits shallow recesses. Decide this first, because it changes how you measure.

Measure in three places

Windows are rarely perfectly square. Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the drop at the left, centre and right. For a recess fit, use the smallest width. Note any handles, tiles, radiators or obstructions that the blind must clear.

Why we still re-measure

Your figures are perfect for a quote and to hold your slot, but a made-to-measure blind is cut to the millimetre. Our fitter measures again on site — checking squareness, opening direction and clearances — so the blind fits first time. That is why online sizes are always "approximate".

Common questions

Do I need to measure exactly before booking?

No — approximate sizes are enough to price your project and reserve a measure-up slot. We take the exact measurements on the day.

What is the difference between recess and exact fit?

A recess fit sits inside the window reveal; an exact fit mounts outside and overlaps the opening, blocking more light. We advise which suits your window.
